It seems dubious that Jeanne de Bourbon almost became the queen of Charles VIII who was never a widower. First, before wedding Anne of Brittany, he was betrothed with Marguerite d'Autriche since many years (she even lived in Paris and was named the little queen by the court) and when his father Louis XI died, he was just 12 or 13 and his mother (who is mentionned as an opponant against the match) died juste months after his accession (the same year of Louis XI). I think it is strange that the dowager queen was kin to promote the union with future queen Anne as the two married years later in 1491 (and in 1483, Anne was just 5...) and was a really quick alliance made by King Charles'sister, Anne de France, who was, at this time, regent. Sorry for my english, i'm french but i really like the work you do in french history :) ==
Yes, Charles might well have become smitten with Jeanne in 1488 (or before), but (my readings do not suggest that) he ever became engaged to her. From 1483 to 1491 Charles was (officially) betrothed to Margaret (of Austria) Habsburg, although in 1488 Charles' sister, Anne of France, then (acting as) regent, may have already been thinking of having Charles ditch Margaret and marry Anne of Brittany, who became duchess of Brittany in 1488. Still, it's fun to imagine the teenage Charles bugging his sister to let him marry one or another eligible female he happens to take a fancy to, only to be told: forget it, Charles, that's never going to happen.
